From the swanky hotel lounges and crazy French Quarter bars to energetic dance halls and funky dives to rocking clubs in far-flung neighborhoods, New Orleans is serious about partying, night life, and its music.

New Orleans Night Life

Because New Orleans is the city that cradled jazz and helped birth the blues, it should be no surprise that New Orleans night life thrives in rhythmic abundance in the streets, clubs, cafes, and concert halls. The heaviest concentration of live music is in the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny, and high standards of musicianship distinguishes New Orleans night lifefrom other cities. Most people discover the Quarter's hot spots as they explore the district on foot.

During Mardi Gras or special events such as the Sugar Bowl, human traffic is tight in the French Quarter. On more relaxed weekends and during the week, club-hopping is quite popular in New Orleans' night lifestyle. Bar culture, with or without live music, is taken seriously here, and anywhere you go in the city you're sure to find a wine bar, pub, or dive to suit you tastes.

New Orleans nightlife serves to a sizable gay and lesbian community. The rowdier gay bars are on and around St. Ann Street, in the French Quarter; the Faubourg Marigny and Bywater are also gay hubs, but are more subtle. Many lesbians live in the Mid-City area, but no single concentration of bars exist.

The performing arts are alive and well in New Orleans. A number of small theater and dance companies present an impressive variety of regional-level fare, as do local colleges and universities such as Tulane, Loyola, Dillard, Xavier, and the University of New Orleans.
